Un telescop Dobson este un reflector newtonian atașat pe o montură Dobson numită și Rockerbox (cutie de lemn). Aceasta înlocuiește montura și trepiedul. Un telescop Dobson este construit foarte simplu, astfel încât la aceste modele banii sunt investiți aproape exclusiv în optică.
Un telescop Dobson poate fi rotit ușor în toate direcțiile. Lagărele de alunecare și pivoții suplimentari ușurează manipularea. Cine achiziționează un Dobson are avantajul asamblării rapide, deoarece telescopul este alcătuit doar din optică și din montura Dobson. Cele două componente se asamblează extrem de rapid și observarea poate începe fără o aliniere prealabilă.
Telescoapele Dobson sunt recomandate mai ales începătorilor, care doresc să debuteze direct cu un telescop mare, în care au investit însă o sumă de bani relativ mică. În multe cazuri, optica poate fi mutată mai târziu fără probleme pe o montură astronomică cu trepied.
