Cu o montură azimutală, un telescop poate fi pivotat pe înălțime și de-a lungul orizontului. Acest unghi orizontal se numește și azimut.
Monturile azimutale pot avea o structură foarte simplă, similară unui trepied foto. O altă variantă îndrăgită este montura cu un singur braț. Ilustrația prezintă un exemplu tipic. În acest caz, telescopul se fixează pe lateralul brațului monturii cu o clemă.
Monturile în furcă sunt gândite pentru optici mai mari. Spre deosebire de monturile cu un singur braț, aici telescopul este ținut din două părți. La cele mai multe modele de monturi în furcă, optica nu poate fi însă scoasă de pe montură.
Monturile azimutale sunt relativ compacte și ușoare. Operarea este intuitivă și nu este necesară un reglaj îndelungat. Dezavantajul este însă faptul că nu permite astrofotografierea cu timpi de expunere mai lungi. Acest dezavantaj poate fi însă remediat cu ajutorul unei pene ecuatoriale.
