Telescoapele recomandate avansaților se adresează celor care doresc să se ocupe intensiv de observarea bolții cerești. Aceștia pot fi observatori cu experiență, dar și începători hotărâți, care doresc să investească de la bun început într-un instrument mai mare.
Telescoapele pentru avansați nu sunt neapărat sisteme complete. Acest lucru este valabil în special pentru modelele OTA. Aceste Optical Tube Assembly sunt telescoape fără montură.
„Recomandate pentru avansați” sunt și opticile cu o apertură de peste 12 inch (305 milimetri), deoarece manevrarea acestora este puțin mai dificilă. În această categorie intră, de asemenea, telescoapele configurate primar pentru astrofotografie, de ex. telescoapele newtoniene pentru astrofotografie, opticile RC și refractoarele apocromate.
Clasificarea modelelor în categoriile începători, avansați și observatoare astronomice servește la o mai bună orientare și nu trebuie înțeleasă ca fiind exclusivă.
