Monturile ecuatoriale sunt proiectate astfel încât o axă să poată fi aliniată paralel cu axa Pământului. Telescopul trebuie rotit doar în jurul acestei axe - numită axa orară - pentru a compensa rotația cerului. Acest lucru permite timpi de expunere lungi pentru astrofotografie, fără efectul perturbator al rotației câmpului de imagine.
Cu ajutorul sistemului de comandă GoTo, se poate selecta un obiect ceresc din baza de date integrată. Motoarele aliniază apoi automat telescopul cu obiectul și îl mențin centrat în ocular sau pe senzorul camerei.
